Wayne Rooney hit a hat trick, Ashley Young added two more along with Danny Wellbeck, Park Ji Sung and Nani also getting on the scoresheet. Theo Walcott and Robin Van Persie, who missed a penalty, scored for the visitors but neither could put the brakes on Sir Alex Ferguson’s youthful side.
Young full back Carl Jenkinson compounded Arsenal’s misery with a red card, their third in three games this season, late on giving a penalty away in the process.
Whilst the Gunners were atrocious United were simply irresistible and won the game in the first half taking a 3-1 lead into the break with Rooney purring up front with Wellbeck.
The youngster kicked things off heading in Anderson’s cross 21 minutes. Van Persie then saw his penalty saved by David de Gea after Jonny Evans had fouled Walcott before Young curled in a delightful effort six minutes later. Rooney then made it three with 40 minutes on the clock bending a superb free kick in from the edge of the area.
Walcott then managed to pull one back just before half time to give the Gunners hope but that quickly vanished as a swashbuckling United put the game beyond doubt scoring three goals in six minutes.
Rooney got his second of the game after 63 minutes firing a low free kick past Wojciech Szczesny to make it 4-1 before Nani made increased that lead three minutes later getting onto the end of Rooney’s ball to turn the ball home. Park then came off the bench blasting the ball into the net from the edge of the box after collecting Young’s pass.
Van Persie then reduced the arrears before Jenkinson fouled Javier Hernandez just outside the penalty area and was sent off. Rooney finally got his hat trick from the spot after Patrice Evra was clipped by Walcott in the box. Young then completed the route curling in another superb effort to make it 8-2
