According to reports in The Telegraph, West Ham United are reportedly willing to listen to offers for striker Javier Hernandez, who is rated at £16m according to Transfermarkt, before the January transfer window slams shut at the end of the month.
What’s the word, then?
Well, The Telegraph says that the Irons will be tempted to move the 29-year-old on just six months after signing him in a £16m deal from Bayer Leverkusen, but they will want to recoup most of that amount with the money then being used to allow David Moyes to bring in a permanent addition to his squad.
Despite the excitement upon his arrival at the London Stadium in July, the former Manchester United attacker has struggled to make an impact for the Irons, and hasn’t even been a regular starter in recent weeks.
How has Hernandez done?
As we mentioned previously, he has never really got going and doesn’t seem to fit into West Ham’s style of play.
The Mexico international didn’t get much of a sniff as a lone striker at the beginning of the campaign when Andy Carroll was absent through injury, although he did score a brace in the defeat to Southampton in August.
However, since that clash at St Mary’s the 29-year-old has only netted twice in 15 appearances in all competitions for the east London outfit, and he was substituted off in the recent draws against Tottenham Hotspur and Shrewsbury Town having failed to make an impression up top on his own.
Would West Ham be right to sell him this month?
They probably would be right to, as long as they receive a decent offer.
While the Irons board, former manager Slaven Bilic and the fans would have been excited by the arrival of a proven goalscorer in the summer, sometimes moves just don’t work out for the club and the player and this looks to be the case now.
Hernandez struggles to win headers or hold the ball up for his teammates when he plays as a lone striker, and he is clearly more of poacher that works well with someone else alongside him.
If Moyes doesn’t plan on playing with two up top then there is little point keeping hold of Hernandez, and they would look to recoup most of the £16m they spent on him before January 31.
